Jami reports: I never thought I would never get as big as I did last summer (on the left) but I did. And after trying many other options without success I never thought I'd be where I am at now (pic on right)! I've always dealt with being overweight and just assumed that's how the rest of my life would be. Yes it's hard and yes I want to throw in the towel and give up sometimes but I look at that pic on the left and realize my kids deserve a better me! I deserve a better me! I am much happier, healthier and feel so much better about myself. I am still hard on myself and some days I have to look at the last four months and realize how far I have come. And though I still want to lose another 15-20kg, I know it's possible and I will succeed.
Yesterday evening I became an Herbalife supervisor because of my passion for the products and my passion to want to help others! These products really do work and they are a great tool to help you get to where you want to be. Herbalife isn't the #1 nutrition company in the world because you don't get results. And nutrition is where it starts people!!
“An extensive questionnaire generated responses from more than 200 U.S. Herbalife Independent Distributors about their weight-loss programs and results. They reported weight loss ranging from 4 pounds to 167 pounds and a reduced body mass index (BMI) of 1.5 points to 24.1 points, suggesting that consumption of Herbalife® products is associated with weight loss and improvement in BMI in those ranges.”

What are healthy fats? Your ultimate guide to making better choices
Healthy fats can help promote heart health. Here are some tips for working more healthy fats into your diet.
Confused about good fats and bad fats? You’re not alone. Aside from questions about weight loss, the topic of healthy fats seems to come up with my clients more than any other. And it’s easy to see why. Many people I talk to remember the low fat diet era of 20 years ago… just as they remember the high fat/low carb era that followed right behind. Then, it seems, the focus shifted – suddenly it wasn’t merely about how much (or how little) fat we should be eating, but whether or not we were eating the right kinds of fat.
What Are Healthy Fats, and Why Are They Good For You?
The fats you eat can be divided up into two broad categories – saturated (unhealthy fats) and unsaturated (healthier fats). Of the two, the unsaturated fats are considered better for you, since these fats – derived primarily from plant foods – can help to keep blood cholesterol levels within a normal range. On the other hand, a diet which contains a lot of saturated fats, (which are found primarily in animal products like butter, cheese, whole milk and meat) can contribute to a rise in blood cholesterol levels.Unsaturated fats can be further broken down into two categories – monounsaturated fats and polyunsaturated fats. You’ll find monounsaturated fats in nuts, seeds, olive and olive oils and avocados, and they’re considered heart-healthy when eaten in moderate amounts – and in place of the less-healthy saturated fats.
Polyunsaturated fats can be further classified as either ‘omega-3’ or ‘omega-6’ fats. And, while your body requires both types, you need them in the proper balance to promote health. The problem for most of us is that we eat too many omega-6 fats (mainly from fried foods, snack foods and sweet baked goods) and not enough fish, nuts, seeds and leafy greens that provide the omega-3s.
Be Choosy With Fats To Keep Calories in Check
One thing to keep in mind – added fats do add calories to your diet. All oils, for example – regardless of their source – have about 120 calories a tablespoon. Just because olive oil is a healthy fat, doesn’t mean you should pour it all over your food. Small amounts of fat can add a lot of flavor to foods, so use them sparingly, and focus on choosing healthy fats. How to Get More Healthy Fats Into Your Diet
The foods that contain heart-healthy fats include nuts and seeds, olives and olive oil, seafood, and avocados. Here are some ways to work more of these healthy fats into your day.Nuts and Seeds
Almonds, pistachios, walnuts and pecans are considered “tree nuts”, which have more heart-healthy omega-3s than peanuts – which aren’t actually nuts, but beans. Here are some ways to include more nuts and seeds into your diet.
- A handful of nuts makes a filling snack
- Try stirring some nut butter into oatmeal, yogurt or protein shakes, or spread some on apple slices for a quick snack
- Finely ground nuts make a delicious crispy coating for fish or chicken. Dip fish filets or chicken breasts into beaten egg white, then lightly coat with ground nuts. Season with salt and pepper, then bake or saute
- Sprinkle nuts or seeds into green salads, on top of cooked vegetables, yogurt or hot cereal, and into your shakes
- Add nuts and seeds to trail mix
- Tahini (sesame seed paste) makes a delicious base for a salad dressing or sauce.
Olive oil is also one of the richest sources of heart-healthy monounsaturated fat. If the flavor of extra-virgin olive oil is too strong for you, look for ‘light’ olive oils which have the same calories as regular olive oil, but are lighter in flavor.
- Use olive oil to replace vegetable oils and butter when you cook
- Make your own salad dressing with 2 parts olive oil, 1 part lemon juice or vinegar, salt and pepper to taste
- Use a tiny bit of olive oil to flavor cooked vegetables
- Add whole olives to salad, or chopped olives to pasta sauces, or stirred into whole grain dishes after cooking
- Try an olive spread for whole grain crackers. Whip up chopped olives, garlic and a little tomato paste in the blender. You could even add some heart-healthy anchovies to take the flavor to the max!
Fish fat naturally contains heart-healthy omega-3s, but most of us simply don’t eat fish as often as we should – that is, a couple of times per week. If you’ve got problems with the taste or texture of fish, or just don’t know how to prepare it, see my article ‘Not sure about eating fish? Try this tempting fish recipe today!’ for some advice on how to get over some of these common hurdles.
- Canned tuna and salmon are super-convenient. Flake some tuna or salmon on top of a green salad for a quick meal, or try my recipe for salmon patties – which can also be made with tuna.
- Frozen cooked shrimp and scallops are easily added to soups or pasta dishes.
- Try using fish instead of chicken in some of your favorite dishes like tacos or one-dish meals.
- Order fish more often when you eat in restaurants.
Avocados are technically a fruit, and a good source of monounsaturated fat. Here are a few of my favorite uses for avocado.
- Use mashed avocado as a substitute for mayonnaise in tuna salad or egg salad.
- Mash into guacamole with a little lime juice and salt, but use cut veggies rather than chips for dipping.
- Avocado pairs really well with eggs. Try a few slices in an omelet, or on top of hard-boiled eggs.
- Mix diced avocado, mango and red onion with a little lime juice and cilantro into a delicious salsa for grilled fish or chicken.

There
are two kinds of body fat—subcutaneous fat and visceral fat.
Subcutaneous fat sits just below the skin; you can pinch it (think
muffin top). Although visceral or abdominal fat, is found deep inside
your gut, it's the reason your belly
protrudes. Since it pads the body's organs, it can't be seen or touched.
But here's the fat truth: visceral fat increases your risk for
cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, colorectal cancer, sleep apnea,
and more. Plus, it raises the risk of breast cancer in women.
Abdominal fat accumulates when we consume more calories than we expend. And the aging process doesn't help the situation either since as we get older, we lose muscle, especially if we're not physically active. This loss of muscle mass means our body uses calories less efficiently, so it can become more challenging to maintain a healthy weight. For some people (especially men), fat cells in the arms and legs lose their ability to store fat, which causes excess fat to go the abdomen.
Visceral fat cells are also biologically active, which means they disrupt the normal balance and functioning of hormones, especially cytokines, which contributes to a greater risk of cardiovascular disease. To make matters worse, visceral fat releases fatty acids into the bloodstream where it can negatively impact the production of blood lipids in the liver. It's also connected to higher total cholesterol, higher LDL (bad cholesterol), lower HDL (good cholesterol) and insulin resistance, raising the risk for type 2 diabetes.
If that's not reason enough to trim your tummy, consider that abdominal fat seems to lower brain volume, which is associated with a higher risk of dementia. Researchers aren't sure why this is, but speculate it's related to inflammation. A large, population-based study found that the presence of central obesity in midlife almost triples the risk of dementia in later life, independent of diabetes, stroke, hypertension, and heart disease.
Although there are several ways to gauge how much abdominal fat you have, the easiest way is to measure your waist circumference just above your hip bones. The measuring tape should fit snugly, but not push into the skin. Make sure it is level all the way around. Relax, exhale, and measure. A waist size of 35 inches or higher for women or 40 for men is too high.
Fortunately reducing the amount of belly fat you have is within your control since it responds well to diet and exercise. Losing even 5 to 10 percent will help lower your risk for disease.

Why Herbalifeline
Fish oil is well known, and there is much data about its benefits, but what Herbalife have done is created the purest and the most potent fish oil. This is a pure, clear capsule giving you high levels of both EPA and DHA.
First of all, fish oil is an Omega 3 Fatty Acid. It is what we call a good fat. We have been obsessed with low fat diets but the reality is fat is very important, and good fat helps maintain our brain, reduce inflammation and actually create a myriad of beneficial things for our heart, our joints, our eyes, even our moods. So everybody should be taking Omega 3 Fatty Acid and with Herbalife`s Herbalifeline one capsule three times a day, you know you are giving your body the Omega 3 fatty acids that it needs.
People who consume more fish oil; more Omega 3 Fatty Acids, benefit because these acids stabilize the heart. So everybody associates lifeline (that`s it has been called Herbalifeline) with saving your life, by protecting your heart. In the last several years though, so much more has been learnt. People who have specific problems; inflammatory bowel disease, arthritis, these people can also benefit.
Also people who have issues with their memories, people who want to preserve their memory - preserve their intellectual function and develop their children`s brains, need fats. Why?
Because our brain is fat. The cells of the brain have phospho lipids. They are dependant on DHA for their growth and protection to maintain their suppleness. To maintain their ability to communicate so that when you want to help people stay young in mind, stay young in thought, stay young in their ability to function, then this is a critical nutritional part of their diet.
People who consume more Omega 3 Fatty Acids find that it helps preserve vision and Omega 3 Fatty Acids can actually help treat depressive illness` because your mood requires this essential fat to maintain your mood, to keep your brain not only working well but to keep your mind being optimistic.
So in our Your health matters series, it is important to introduce Herbalifeline as it means a great deal to your nutritional health . Everybody should be taking enough Omega 3 Fatty Acids and with Herbalifeline, one capsule three times a day will be of great benefit. People with specific problems, heart disease, inflammation of the joints (arthritis), inflammation of the bowel (colitis), mood problems (depression) can take two or three capsules three times a day.
This is a powerful nutritional product and this is the finest version. Herbalifeline is the highest concentration of EPA and DHA available and it`s a Herbalife product. The only problems people ever experience with taking fish oil is some people get reflux or it repeats on them or gives them gas or indigestion. So Herbalife have added special herbs to further reduce the possibility of that, and Herbalife has added Vitamin E, another potent anti oxidant, not only to give you additional Vitamin E for your own health but also to maintain the freshness of the fish oil in the capsule.
Herbalifeline a product that is for your life, for your health, for so many parts of your body. A most highly purified, easy to take fish oil product that you can take for your health because YOUR HEALTH MATTERS.

Researchers challenge the link between weight gain and diabetes
Conventional wisdom about type 2 diabetes suggests that it's usually preceded by substantial weight gain. But a new study from Denmark researchers suggests there may be much more to the story when it comes to the weight gain-diabetes link, particularly that a large increase in body weight isn't necessarily the textbook pattern that causes diabetes development. The findings suggest that type 2 diabetes isn't "a single disease entity, but rather a heterogeneous disease with different pathophysiological pathways depending on the level and development of obesity," the authors wrote in PLOS Medicine.
Different changes mean different risk factors
The study included 6,705 participants who were free of diabetes at the beginning of the trial. Every five years, they were tested for diabetes, and the researchers recorded measurements of body mass index to record patterns of weight gain or loss.Three groups were identified when it came to how diabetes developed: one that was "stably overweight," who showed little change in their BMIs over the years before developing diabetes; one comprised of those who had gained weight consistently before diagnosis; and one made up of people who were persistently obese during the entire study period before developing the condition.
The three distinct patterns seen suggest that there are different changes in metabolic health over time that affect diabetes risk. Therefore, discussion about diabetes should address the fact that prevention need not only be focused on helping obese people lose weight.
"Strategies focusing on small weight reductions for the entire population may be more beneficial than predominantly focusing on weight loss for high-risk individuals," the authors wrote.

Metabolism MythsBy Susan Bowerman, MS, RD, CSSD |
PreviousView AllNext
|
We often blame ‘slow metabolism’ for our inability to keep our weight under control. But what is metabolism, exactly? And, is there anything we can do to change our metabolic rate?Metabolism refers to all the chemical processes that take place in the body in order to sustain life – processes that allow you to breathe, pump blood, keep your brain functioning and extract energy from your food. Your basal metabolic rate refers to the number of calories your body uses each day, at rest, just to keep all your vital organs functioning. The metabolic rate is directly related to your body composition. Every pound of body fat you have burns only about 2 calories a day. But the rest of you – your lean body mass – burns about 14 calories per pound each day. A big portion of your lean body mass is made up of muscle, so one of the best things you can do to boost your metabolic rate is to build up muscle through strength training. And, make sure to take in adequate protein from the diet, which helps to build and maintain lean muscle, too. Here are the facts surround five myths about metabolism: Myth: Aging slows your metabolism. Truth: People do tend to put on weight as they get older – but it’s typically because they tend to exercise less, or less vigorously, than they used to – and that means fewer calories burned per day. As a result, loss of muscle mass can occur which reduces the body’s lean body mass – which results in a slower metabolic rate. Cardiovascular exercise to burn calories and strength training to preserve or build up muscle are great defenses against age-related weight gain. Myth: You’re stuck with the metabolism you have and you can’t change it. Truth: While it may appear that there are people who eat all the time and never seem to gain, chances are they make healthy, relatively low calorie selections naturally. Many of these “lucky” people also burn more calories simply because they move more - they might fidget more, or get up from their desks frequently during the day to stretch, or walk down the hall to talk to a colleague instead of e-mailing. So, once you’ve made the commitment to boost your metabolism by building more muscle, use those muscles more by moving around frequently throughout the day. Myth: You burn more calories digesting ice-cold foods and beverages than foods that are room temperature or warmer. Truth: In a laboratory, very slight increases in calorie burn have been measured in people who drink very cold beverages. But the change is too small (amounting to about 10 more calories burned per day) to have any meaningful impact on weight loss. Myth: If you cut calories, your metabolic rate will slow down, so what’s the point? Truth: It is true that your metabolic rate can slow a bit when you cut calories – your body’s natural inclination is to try to conserve calories as best it can. But, these decreases are relatively small, and if you become more active as you lose weight, you can offset these small changes. With a combination of diet AND exercise, you can help to preserve the rate at which your body burns calories. Myth: If you stop eating at night, when your metabolism is slower, you’ll lose more weight. Truth: When people lose weight because they stop eating after a certain time of day, it’s only because they’ve cut their overall calorie consumption - not because they are eating their calories earlier in the day. Consuming all your calories before the sun goes down won’t speed up your weight loss unless you also eat fewer calories than you need. Susan Bowerman is a consultant to Herbalife. |
DRUGS THAT STEAL YOUR HEALTH
6 March 2012 at 07:08
By. Dr. Tony VendryesModern drugs have benefitted mankind in many ways. However, while pharmaceuticals can save lives, many of them have serious side effects, like heart attacks or suicide. It is very important to remember that all drugs - every single one of them, have side effects. Many drugs are known to actually have toxic effects on various organs like the liver or the kidneys or the brain. But did you know that many other side effects result from the ability of these drugs to rob the body of important vitamins and minerals.
Experts estimate that about 30% of the side effects of pharmaceuticals are the direct result of these drug-induced nutrient deficiencies. In other words, a drug steals nutrients from your body, and this lack of nutrients causes additional side effects. The drug acts like an “anti-vitamin pill,” taking away the substances you need for good health. Thus, nutrient depletion caused by the drugs is often directly responsible for many of the side effects associated with pharmaceuticals.
Among the most common nutrient stealing drugs are oral contraceptives (birth control pills), cholesterol-lowering drugs (statins), and the antibiotics. These and many other medications, both over-the-counter and prescription, can interfere with your body’s ability to digest, absorb, manufacture, or utilise certain nutrients, leading to “side effects. Let me specifically explain which popular drugs deplete vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients from the body.
The BIRTH CONTROL PILL
This is usually a combination of synthetic estrogen and progestin used to prevent pregnancy by suppressing ovulation.
Taking this pill may deplete your supply of, increase your need for, or interfere with the actions of folic acid, magnesium, tyrosine, riboflavin niacin (B3), vitamin B6, vitamin B12, vitamin C and zinc.
ALUMINUM ANTACIDS (Maalox®, Mylanta®)
Aluminum containing antacids are popular over-the-counter remedies for heartburn, designed to neutralize excess stomach acid and prevent it from burning the esophagus.
The use of aluminum antacids may deplete your supply of and increase your need for vitamin A, folic acid, vitamin D, calcium, chromium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus and zinc.
CHOLESTEROL DRUGS - Simvastatin (Zocor®)
Simvastatin is just one of a long list of the “statin” family of drugs used to reduce cholesterol and blood fats.
Taking the statin drugs may deplete your supply of and increase your need for coenzyme Q10 (researchers believe that the long-term use of statin drugs may cause heart failure due to the reduction of coenzyme Q10 levels in the muscles of the heart), beta-carotene and vitamin E,
ANTIBIOTICS - Ciprofloxacin (Cipro®)
Ciprofloxacin is a popular antibacterial agent used to treat infections of the urinary and respiratory tracts, sinuses, and other areas of the body.
Taking this antibiotic may deplete your supply of, increase your need for, or interfere with the activity of biotin, inositol, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, vitamin K, zinc plus the healthy bacteria like Bifidobacteria and Lactobacillus acidophilus.
DIABETES MEDS – Glucovance®
This is a combination of two drugs used to treat diabetes: glyburide stimulates the pancreas to produce larger amounts of insulin, while metformin helps to remove excess glucose from the blood.
Taking these medicines may deplete your supply of, increase your need for, or interfere with the activity of vitamin B12, folic acid, sodium and coenzyme Q10
STOMACH MEDS - Prilosec®, Zantac®
Drugs like Prilosec interfere with the secretion of hydrochloric acid by the cells in the stomach lining and are now considered first-line treatment for heartburn and other symptoms of acid reflux disease (GERD).
The use of this medicine may deplete your supply of and increase your need for beta-carotene, folic acid, thiamin, vitamin B12, iron, sodium and zinc.
ANTIDEPRESSANTS - (Prozac®)
Prozac is the first in a family of drugs to treat depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder and panic disorder. These drugs are called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), and works by increasing the levels of serotonin in the brain.
Taking this medication may deplete your supply of the hormone melatonin normally produced by the pineal gland in the brain.
BLOOD PRESSURE DRUGS - (Micardis®, Diovan ®)
These ‘sartan’ drugs are prescribed to lower elevated blood pressure and are all used in combination with a diuretic hydrochlorothiazide,
Taking these medicines may deplete your supply of, increase your need for, or interfere with the activity of magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, zinc and coenzyme Q10. Sadly, many of these nutrients are important in normalizing blood pressure.
ANTICONVULSANTS - Phenytoin (Dilantin®)
Phenytoin is used to treat various types of epileptic seizures, and to prevent seizures in people who have had brain surgery or a head injury.
This drug may deplete your supply of or interfere with the action of biotin, folic acid, thiamin, vitamin B12, vitamin D, vitamin K, calcium, phosphorus and carnitine.
STEROIDS - Prednisone
Prednisone is used to treat inflammatory problems of the skin, joints, eyes, respiratory tract, gastrointestinal tract, and other parts of the body. It may also be used in organ transplants to prevent rejection.
Taking this well known medicine may deplete your supply of or increase your need for vitamin A, vitamin B6, folic acid, vitamin C, vitamin D, vitamin K, calcium, magnesium, potassium, selenium and zinc.
PROTECT YOURSELF
First: try to take the least amount of drugs necessary. I suggest that you have a frank discussion with your health care provider on this matter.
Second: select foods that are rich in the nutrients depleted by prescription drugs you are taking. This provides another way to avert pharmaceutical-induced nutrient deficiencies.
Third: Take adequate amounts of the appropriate nutritional supplements with your meals to replace what has been lost or made deficient. Again I recommend the Cellular Nutrition Program by HERBALIFE.
A goldmine of information on many other drugs and the nutrients they deplete is available in The Side Effects Bible by Dr. Frederic Vagnini, and Dr. Barry Fox.

:) I lost 17.1kg from 126.6kg in 5months! My name is Afzal I am 40yrs old. I met my coach Sakz Shaik in October 2013 she insisted I bring my wife along. She weighed and measured me weekly monitoring my diet very carefully! She worked with my wife planning my meal preparations. She made me follow a brilliant eating program together with my Herbalife Products.
I still enjoyed my curries and normal day to day Indian food. I was never hungry! I just listen to what Sakz said and followed it and the weight just fell off. Occassionally I cheated! Never told her! Thanks to my amazing wife who supported me all the way.
Asides from the weightoss I lost 14cm around my chest, 19cm around my waist, 8cm around my hip. Wen I start I had no Tanita Scale reading and that got me scared. My visceral fat from 26 dropped to 17. My body fat from over 50 now is 35.7. Although my reading are still critically high I still am working to get them to the normal range soon. I feel absolutely energetic! U won't believe it! People don't even recognise me anymore! Inshallah I plan on getting to the double digits soon! Herbalife is the best! Jazakallah to my coach Sakz Shaik and not forgetting my wife!(y) Without you ladies I wouldn't have done it! Afzal

Fat kids aren’t cool
October 30, 2013 in Nutrition, Weight loss
Tags: childhood obesity
Childhood obesity is one of the
most serious public health challenges of the 21st century. According to
studies, childhood obesity has more than doubled in children and tripled
in adolescents in the past 30 years.
South Africa is no exception. Not only are we one of the countries with the highest rate of obesity in the world (over 29% of men and 56% of women are classified as overweight or obese) we also have some of the fattest kids in the world.
Earlier this year the results of the first South African National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (SANHANES-1) revealed that South Africa’s preschool children are among the fattest in the world.
The 2012 survey has found that 22.9% of SA children between two and five years were overweight. That is double the figure of preschool obesity in other African countries such as Morocco, Swaziland, Botswana, and Nigeria (11%) – and the US (12%).
The reasons for this shocking increase are complex, but our sedentary lifestyle (think TV, computers and cellphones), lack of physical activity (and PT classes in public schools), and poor diets of junk food and sugary sodas are definitely some of the big culprits.
Sadly, childhood obesity does not only result in low self-esteem and bullying at school, but also serious health problems such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and cholesterol, heart disease, stroke and certain types of cancer.
As adults we have a duty to teach our kids healthy habits. Part of the parenting role is to set an example by eating healthily, exercising regularly, and having fun while doing so. Actions are so much powerful than words.
Read these amazing stories of two overweight kids (a 17-year-old teenage boy and a 10-year-old girl) who managed to shake off their extra weight with the help of caring adults. If they can do it, so can you.

Most South Africans follow a sedentary lifestyle unaware of the dangers of being overweight or obese.
With approximately one child in five South African children overweight and exposed to a number of health risks as they grow older, the International Statistical Classification of Diseases has specified obesity as a disease in its own right.
The South African Comparative Risk Assessment Report that was conducted by the Medical Research Council revealed that over 50% of South African adult females and 17% of children up to age nine are overweight or obese.
According to the study almost eight million South Africans aged 30 years and older carry a risk for a chronic lifestyle disease due to high cholesterol and 5.5% of adults 30 years and older have diabetes.
Government is putting in every effort to promote a healthy lifestyle; Minister of Health, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, has set a target to radically reduce Non-Communicable Diseases by 10% by 2020.
The Heart Foundation explains that being obese or overweight can increase the risk of developing health problems such as heart diseases, diabetes, certain cancers, arthritis, gallstones, sleep apnoea, slower healing and an increased susceptibility to infections and psychological problems where people may feel insecure because of their obesity.
Notably Type Two diabetes is becoming more prevalent in South Africa as the number of overweight people increases. This is because diabetes is often associated with obesity and a study has showed that people with a wide stomach girth show a particularly high risk of developing the disease.
At least 150 minutes of exercise a week or a reduction of between 5% and 7% of your body fat can lower your risk of developing diabetes by more than half. While losing between 5% and 10% of your body weight and doing some exercise can substantially lower your risk of getting heart diseases and as well as cancer.
During the National Nutrition Week in October people were encouraged to use the newly developed Food Guide and the recently updated Guidelines for Healthy Eating to learn more about the best choices for healthy eating plans.
Now in its 14th year, National Nutrition Week has been planned jointly by the Department of Health, the Association for Dietetics in South Africa, the Consumer Goods Council of South Africa and the Consumer Education Project of Milk SA.
The Guidelines for Healthy Eating are food-based instead of nutrient-based and were developed using an evaluation of food availability as well as compatibility with the country’s cultural food intake patterns. Both publications have undergone extensive consumer testing.
According to the Heart and Stroke Foundation being overweight is usually the result of energy imbalance in which one’s energy intake has been greater than the energy used over a number of years. The foundation points out that there are a number of factors associated with obesity:
Eating too much of the wrong types of food (such as takeaways and animal fats).
Lack of exercise.
Family history - if parents are overweight then children often follow the same pattern.
Pregnancy - the more pregnancies a woman has, the more likely she is to put on weight.
Negative emotions, which can cause some people to eat as a comfort mechanism.
The Heart and Stroke Foundation recommends the following lifestyle changes for people wanting to lose weight or live healthily:
Regular exercise.
Increase your intake of fibre to make your stomach feel fuller for longer.
Eat at least five portions of vegetables and fruit daily.
Use healthy cooking methods such as steaming, boiling and grilling.
Limit the amount of extra fats in your diet, such as butter, cream, mayonnaise, dressings and oil.
Limit your salt intake because salt makes your body retain water.
Drink between six to eight glasses of water a day.

How much body fat is healthy for children?
Following the latest medical research you are now
able to monitor your child's body fat percentage and encourage them to
stay within the healthy body fat range as they develop. As a parent you
will already be aware of your child's health and general wellbeing. By
also using a Tanita Monitor you can have even greater confidence that
your family is leading a healthier lifestyle.
Jebb S, McCarthy D, Fry T, Prentice AM (2004). New body fat reference curves for children. Obesity Reviews (NAASO Suppl) A156
What is Visceral Fat?
Visceral Fat (Abdominal Fat) is the fat that
surrounds the vital organs on the trunk / stomach area of the body. For a
quick easy explanation - try tensing your tummy muscles, then pinch the
fat by your belly button. What you can pinch is subcutaneous fat
(under the skin) it is not visceral fat. Visceral fat is the fat you
can't pinch - it is on the inside of your muscle wall. Typically this
type of fat is most often found in high levels in middle aged men (often
mistakenly referred to as a beer belly). Men have a genetic
predisposition to accumulating fat in this way, whereas women are more
likely to store fat subcutaneously. (Subcutaneous fat has been shown to
be associated with the nutrition required by a developing foetus, and
for breast feeding). High Visceral Fat levels increase the risk of high
blood pressure, heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Lowering Visceral
Fat levels can stabilise insulin action substantially, and reduce the
risk of diabetes and other related illnesses.
Healthy Visceral Fat Levels Chart
Your Tanita Body Composition Monitor will assess your visceral fat level into the following categories :
Low Risk | Higher Risk |
1 - 12 | 13 - 59 |
Check ur Visceral Fat on Sakz Shaik Scale! I can help u drop dat Visceral Fat
There are two kinds of body fat—subcutaneous fat and visceral fat. Subcutaneous fat sits just below the skin; you can pinch it (think muffin top). Although visceral or abdominal fat, is found deep inside your gut, it's the reason your belly protrudes. Since it pads the body's organs, it can't be seen or touched. But here's the fat truth: visceral fat increases your risk for cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, colorectal cancer, sleep apnea, and more.
Engage in moderate intensity exercise, including strength training. Watch portion sizes. Consume a diet that emphasizes complex carbohydrates and replaces saturated fats with polyunsaturated fats and watch your waistline shrink.
:| But also remember even thin people can have high visceral fats!

Why do I need to monitor my body fat?
We all need some body fat to be healthy. It's vital
for basic body functions like regulating body temperature, storing
vitamins and cushioning joints and organs.
But too much fat can damage your health and could put you at greater risk of developing serious medical conditions. Excess body fat is known to contribute to heart disease, high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes mellitus and some forms of cancer.*

Body fat is not always visible to the naked eye. You may have an acceptable weight and figure, but could still be carrying more body fat than you think.
Weight alone cannot distinguish between the pounds that come from body fat and those that come from lean body tissue, such as muscle and bone. By using a Tanita Body Fat / Body Composition Monitor, you can keep a regular check on your body fat levels, helping you stay within the healthy ranges.
Reducing excess body fat will help you improve your body shape and appearance. You'll feel better, look better and enjoy a better, fitter quality of life.

I love their shake, and several of the other supplements, in fact this is the first time I literally lost weight and kept it off for years!!! It’s no hype on my part, it taste good and I’m not hungry. My energy has increased and I have lost 12kg in 3 months, while eating out, and eating things I like. I tried so many other things and this is the first one that I can honestly say I could do this for the rest of my like. My favorite in chocolate.

Control Cholesterol
Cholesterol is a fatty substance that is used by the body to make cell membranes and some hormones.25% of the cholesterol we need comes from the food we eat; the rest is made by your liver and body cells.
Cholesterol plays an important role in your body. However, too much cholesterol can lead to cardiovascular disease.
Why is it important to control cholesterol?
Too much bad cholesterol (LDL) can combine with blood cells and become deposited on the walls of the arteries and veins. This causes the blood vessels to become narrower causing higher blood pressure.
These blockages can also lead to heart disease and stroke.
Good cholesterol and bad cholesterol
All cholesterol is bad, right?Actually there are two types of cholesterol, the LDL (low density lipoprotein) cholesterol which is the one that causes the fatty deposits on our blood vessels and the good cholesterol called HDL (high-density lipoprotein) which actually prevents heart disease by removing excess cholesterol in the blood.
What can I do to control cholesterol?
Dietary changes are the best way to control cholesterol levels in the body.• Eat healthy foods that are low in cholesterol, trans fats and saturated fats.
• Eat plenty of dietary fibre which also helps to control cholesterol levels.
• Make cholesterol level screening part of your annual check up
• Exercise. An active, healthy body makes more good cholesterol.
• Watch your weight and maintain a healthy BMI range.
NB: Some people have a tendency to make too much bad cholesterol due to a genetic condition.
They can be perfectly healthy, fit and eat a good diet. That is why it is important to be screened for cholesterol levels, even if you think you are low risk.
Medication
If you suffer from high cholesterol, your doctor may prescribe medication, as well as lifestyle changes. The most commonly prescribed medications for high cholesterol are statins which help to lower bad cholesterol production in the liver.-
What is Insulin Resistance?
-
Insulin resistance, sometimes known as impaired glucose tolerance, is a condition in which the cells inside your body no longer respond to insulin efficiently. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas that is critical in the metabolism of carbohydrates and sugars. It's what cells need to use the energy in the sugars and starches you eat.
When insulin cannot be used properly, the cells in your body cannot properly obtain energy and the level of sugars in your blood increases. This is what happens in diabetics, but to a much more extensive degree. It is thought that insulin resistance is a precursor to diabetes.
A person with insulin resistance will have a fasting blood sugar level of 100 to 125 mg/dl. If you think you might have insulin resistance, your physician will perform a glucose test.
Causes of Insulin Resistance
-
Insulin resistance can be caused by genetics. If a family member is type 2 diabetic or has been diagnosed with insulin resistance, you may be more likely to suffer from it. Certain medications also have effects on the way your body manages blood sugar and insulin production. Talk to your doctor about medications that can evaluate your risk of developing insulin resistance.
The exact cause of insulin resistance is largely unknown. However, people who are obese (especially in the mid-section), have ongoing illnesses or stress, pregnant women and those who use steroids have much higher occurrences of insulin resistance. Individuals with high blood pressure, high cholesterol and triglycerides and a waist circumference of more than 35 inches (women) or 40 inches (men) are also at an increased risk of developing insulin resistance.
How Insulin Resistance Relates to Diabetes
-
Since insulin resistance is a condition in which the body cannot properly utilize insulin, it often is seen as a precursor to type 2, or adult-onset, diabetes. In most cases of adult-onset diabetes, patients develop insulin resistance years before full-fledged diabetes.
During insulin resistance, the pancreas must compensate for the body's inability to utilize insulin by producing more of it than usual. Over time, the pancreas wears down and can no longer produce the amount of insulin needed to maintain proper blood sugar levels. This is when a person is diagnosed with diabetes.
Treatment
-
Following a diet that contains a lot of lean protein, whole grains and plenty of vegetables and fruits can help your body utilize insulin properly. Choosing foods that have a low glycemic index can help treat insulin resistance and keep the blood sugar levels in check. Low-glycemic-index foods are metabolized slowly and do not produce large spikes in blood sugar. Overall, they take less insulin to metabolize. Whole grains, veggies and even most dairy products are considered to be low or medium in glycemic index.
High-glycemic-index foods should be largely avoided, as they produce a quick spike in blood sugar and are harder on the pancreas because they provoke large amounts of insulin to be made. These foods include candy, cakes, pastries, cookies, white bread, white flour and white rice.
Some foods, like potatoes, are high-glycemic index when you take the skin off, but when eaten in small amounts with the skin left on, they become lower on the glycemic index.
Prevention
-
Following a low-glycemic index diet is also beneficial in preventing insulin resistance. Maintaining a healthy weight (or losing weight if you are currently overweight or obese), exercising regularly and managing stress levels are all great ways to reduce your risk of becoming insulin resistant or diabetic.
Choosing foods that are low in saturated fats and refined carbohydrates and sugar and high in fiber make it easy to follow a low-glycemic index diet. As a general rule, anything that has the word "white" in it should be avoided. Instead of white rice, eat brown rice. Instead of white bread, eat whole-grain bread. The higher the fiber content in a product, the lower its ranking on the glycemic index.
Avoid drinks that contain sugar or high-fructose corn syrup such as sodas and fruit drinks. Even whole fruit juices should be moderated, as they are a concentrated form of natural sugar and produce spikes in blood sugar as well.

Does PCOS put women at risk for other health problems?
Women with PCOS have greater chances of developing several serious health conditions, including life-threatening diseases. Recent studies found that:- More than 50 percent of women with PCOS will have diabetes or pre-diabetes (impaired glucose tolerance) before the age of 40.
- The risk of heart attack is 4 to 7 times higher in women with PCOS than women of the same age without PCOS.
- Women with PCOS are at greater risk of having high blood pressure.
- Women with PCOS have high levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol and low levels of HDL (good) cholesterol.
- Women with PCOS can develop sleep apnea. This is when breathing stops for short periods of time during sleep.
Women with PCOS are also at risk for endometrial cancer. Irregular menstrual periods and the lack of ovulation cause women to produce the hormone estrogen, but not the hormone progesterone. Progesterone causes the endometrium (lining of the womb) to shed each month as a menstrual period. Without progesterone, the endometrium becomes thick, which can cause heavy or irregular bleeding. Over time, this can lead to endometrial hyperplasia, when the lining grows too much, and cancer.
I have PCOS. What can I do to prevent complications?
If you have PCOS, get your symptoms under control at an earlier age to help reduce your chances of having complications like diabetes and heart disease. Talk to your doctor about treating all your symptoms, rather than focusing on just one aspect of your PCOS, such as problems getting pregnant. Also, talk to your doctor about getting tested for diabetes regularly. Other steps you can take to lower your chances of health problems include:- Eating right
- Exercising
- Not smoking
How can I cope with the emotional effects of PCOS?
Having PCOS can be difficult. You may feel:- Embarrassed by your appearance
- Worried about being able to get pregnant
- Depressed
