whether you want to lose or gain weight, or maintain your current weight, the importance of protein goes
far beyond physical appearance and muscle building.
A NECESSITY FOR EVERY BODY
Protein is an important component of every cell in the body. It is an organic compound, composed of
22 amino acids, otherwise known as the building blocks of life. Protein is stored in muscles and organs, and

How Is Obesity Treated?

Three factors are considered when treating obesity: the severity of the obesity, the presence of other risk factors for heart disease, and the possibility of other health problems that may be caused or made worse by excess weight.
Doctors now realize that it may be unrealistic to attempt to get a person who is obese to lose a large amount of weight and keep it off. However, recent studies have shown that even modest weight loss provides significant health benefits by reducing the risk for diabetes, heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, and other diseases.
Anyone who is trying to lose weight should change his or her eating and exercise habits. Counseling or support groups are an important part of successfully making these lifestyle changes.
Depression or a physical problem that limits a person's ability to exercise should be treated, if possible, before starting a weight-loss program. People with untreated depression often have a difficult time staying on a weight-loss program. If a person is unable to do at least mild exercise, he or she will have difficulty losing weight.
Weight-loss medications, either prescription or nonprescription, should only be used along with a weight-loss diet and exercise program. Use of medications without lifestyle changes is unlikely to have great, long-term success.
A very low-calorie diet may be considered if you need to lose weight quickly to protect your health and your health care provider decides it is a safe method for you to use. People are not kept on this diet for long periods of time because the diet lacks certain nutrients the body needs. Such diets should be done only with careful medical supervision.
Even if you and your health care provider have developed a plan for weight loss, the daily decisions needed to make the plan work are up to you. Healthy, long-term success in conquering obesity depends on changing your eating and exercise habits.
Surgery is sometimes used to treat obesity. Many doctors will consider it only for people who have not been able to lose weight with other treatments and who are at high risk for developing other health problems because of their weight.

Understanding Obesity -- the Basics

What Is Obesity?

The medical definition of obesity is based on the amount of body fat a person has. A person can weigh more than what is thought to be healthy without being obese. For example:
  • A person may weigh too much because his or her body retains too much water, called edema. Though this is not a healthy situation, the person is not obese.
  • Some athletes, such as football players and body builders, may weigh more than what is normally considered a healthy weight, but their excess weight is muscle, not fat.
Until recently, a person was thought to be obese if he or she weighed at least 20% more than his or her ideal body weight. However, ideal body weight tables have been replaced by the body mass index (BMI). The BMI is based on your height and weight, and it gives a better -- but not perfect -- estimate of body fat.
BMI is calculated by dividing a person's weight (in kilograms) by his or her height (in meters, squared). BMI can also be calculated by multiplying weight (in pounds) by 705, then dividing by height (in inches) twice.
A BMI of 30 or more is considered obese and a BMI between 25 to 29.9 is considered overweight.
Attitudes about the causes of obesity are changing as we learn more about the condition. People who are obese were once thought to lack self-control and have poor eating habits. Though it is true that many Americans eat too much and exercise too little, recent research has shown that genetic factors also play a role in obesity.
Because of this research, obesity is now thought to be a chronic disease. This means dieting once in a while is not enough to take care of the problem. Obesity must be treated for the rest of the person's life if it is to be controlled.

What Are the Risks of Obesity?

People who are obese are much more likely to have certain health problems, such diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke. This is even more likely if the person also has high cholesterol or triglyceride (fat) levels in the blood, as obese people often do.
A person who is very obese may have breathing problems including sleep apnea. Women who are obese have a greater risk of uterine, breast, and gallbladder cancer. Men and women who are obese have an increased risk for colorectal cancer and gallstones. Men who are obese have an increased risk for prostate cancer. Extra weight puts more stress on the joints than normal, especially in the legs and lower back. Because of this, people who are obese are more likely to develop arthritis, especially in the back, knees and hips.

FATTY LIVER..
Overview

Fatty liver, or steatosis, is a broad term that describes the buildup of fats in the liver. Having fat in your liver is normal, but if more than five to 10 percent is fat, then it is called fatty liver disease.

Fatty liver is a reversible condition and usually goes away on its own. Fatty liver often has no symptoms and does not cause any permanent damage.

The liver is the second largest organ in the body. The liver’s function is to process everything we eat or drink and filter any harmful substances from the blood. If too much fat has accumulated in the liver then this process is interfered with. The liver commonly repairs itself by rebuilding new liver cells when the old ones are damaged. When there is repeated damage to the liver, permanent scarring takes place. This is called cirrhosis.

Fatty liver is quite common. Ten to 20 percent of Americans have too much fat in their liver, but no inflammation or damage is present. Most cases of fatty liver are detected between ages 50 and 60. When fatty liver is caused by an underlying condition, it can become harmful to the liver if the cause is not recognized and treated.

Symptoms and Causes
What Symptoms and Causes Fatty Liver?

There are typically no symptoms of fatty liver. Some people experience fatigue or vague abdominal discomfort. The liver may become slightly enlarged—which your doctor will notice with a thorough physical exam.

If the liver has become inflamed, there may be other symptoms, such as poor appetite, weight loss, and feeling extremely weak, sick, or tired.

The most common cause is alcoholism. Almost all heavy drinkers have fatty liver disease. Other causes are toxins, certain drugs, and inherited metabolic disorders. In many cases, doctors are not exactly sure what causes fatty liver in people who aren’t alcoholics, but it has been associated with high blood cholesterol, obesity, and type 2 diabetes.

Fatty liver develops when the body creates too much fat or cannot metabolize fat fast enough. As a result, the leftover is stored in liver cells where it accumulates to become fatty liver disease. Eating a high-fat diet does not directly result in fatty liver.

Besides alcoholism, other common causes of fatty liver include:

metabolic syndrome
excess body weight
insulin resistance (type 2 diabetes)
high levels of triglycerides (fats) in the blood
drugs
aspirin
steroids
tamoxifen
tetracycline
pregnancy
toxins
viruses (hepatitis A, etc.)

What are the Types of Fatty Liver?

There are four types of fatty liver:
Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver

Nonalcoholic fatty liver (NAFL) develops when the liver has difficulty breaking down fats, which causes a buildup in the liver tissue. The cause is not related to alcohol. NAFL is diagnosed when more than 10 percent of the liver is fat.
Alcoholic Fatty Liver

Alcoholic fatty liver is the earliest stage of alcohol-related liver disease. The liver is damaged by heavy drinking and unable to break down fats. If the patient abstains from alcohol, the fatty liver will go away. Within six weeks of being alcohol-free, the fat will disappear. However, if excessive alcohol use continues, cirrhosis may develop.
Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH)

When the fat builds up enough, it will cause the liver to swell. If the original cause is not from alcohol, it is called NASH. This disease can impair liver function. Symptoms can be seen with this disease, such as loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and yellowing of the skin. If left untreated, NASH can progress to permanent scarring of the liver and eventual liver failure.
Acute Fatty Liver of Pregnancy

This is a rare complication of pregnancy that can be life threatening. Symptoms begin in the third trimester and include persistent nausea and vomiting, pain in the upper-right abdomen, jaundice, and general malaise. Women who are pregnant will be screened for this condition. Most women improve after delivery and have no lasting effects.

Who is at Risk for Fatty Liver?

Since fatty liver is the buildup of extra fats in the liver, it is more likely to develop if you are overweight or obese.

Other factors that may increase your risk for fatty liver are:

excessive alcohol use (drinking large amounts of alcohol can damage your liver)
excessive use of over-the-counter medication (taking more than the recommended doses of certain medications, such as acetaminophen, can increase your risk of fatty liver)
type 2 diabetes (fat accumulation in the liver has been linked to insulin resistance, the most common cause of type 2 diabetes)

high cholesterol
high triglyceride levels
malnutrition
metabolic syndrome
Diagnosis
How is Fatty Liver Diagnosed?
Physical Exam

If the liver has become inflamed, your physician can detect it by examining the abdomen. An extensive history may reveal fatigue or loss of appetite as well. A thorough history will include alcohol use and other medications or supplements.
Blood Tests

Higher than normal liver enzymes may be found on a routine blood test. This does not confirm a diagnosis of fatty liver. Further analysis will look for the cause of inflammation.
Ultrasound

The fat on your liver will show up as a white area on the image. Other imaging studies may be done as well such as a CT (computed tomography) scan or MRI (magnetic resonance imaging). Imaging studies can detect fat in the liver, but will not be able to confirm any further damage.
Liver Biopsy

A needle is inserted into the liver to remove a piece of tissue for examination (after giving a local anesthetic to lessen the pain). This is the only way to know for certain if you have fatty liver. The biopsy will also help your doctor learn the exact cause.

Treatment and Prevention
How is Fatty Liver Treated and Prevented?

Treatment focuses on the factors that may cause the disease. Common interventions center around:

treatment of alcoholism
cholesterol management
weight loss
blood sugar control

To reduce your risk of fatty liver, make healthy lifestyle choices, such as:

Limit or avoid alcohol consumption.
Choose a healthy diet.
Maintain a healthy weight.

Long-Term Outlook
What is the Long-Term Outlook for Fatty Liver?

Most cases of fatty liver are harmless and will not lead to progressive liver disease. If the cause is related to high cholesterol, diabetes, or obesity, then treating the cause will reverse the fatty liver process.

If the cause is alcoholism, cessation of drinking may allow the liver to heal completely. A biopsy can determine if there is permanent damage, how bad is the damage, and how it needs to be treated.

Wheat isn’t what it used to be. Agricultural scientists have been tinkering with the crop to increase its hardiness and to develop characteristics that make the grain easier to bake with. Unfortunately, those changes have transformed wheat into a harmful ingredient for many people — especially those who are trying to shed pounds.

#1 – Gut Inflammation
Gluten is the ingredient in wheat you’ve probably heard the most about — it’s also found in barley and rye. Research suggests that wheat contains nearly ten times the amount of gluten today as it did 50 years ago, and that’s very bad news for the millions who are sensitive to this protein.

Gluten can prompt your body’s immune system to attack the digestive tract, and that can lead to malnutrition, irritable bowel syndrome, and weight gain, according to research by the University of Chicago.

The scientist behind Herbalife performance nutrition line, Herbalife24, doesn’t just develop the products for athletes – he uses them too.  As an ultra-marathoner and former USA Cat 2 cyclist, John Heiss, Ph.D., Herbalife Sr. Director of Sports and Fitness, Worldwide Product Marketing, understands firsthand the importance of nutrition and setting healthy goals to lead a balanced life, even for those of us who aren’t competitive athletes.
We caught up with John to get the lowdown on his workout routine and tips for leading a healthy lifestyle.

Can you tell us what your typical workout routine looks like?
My workout routine depends on my specific goals or an upcoming event.  Right now, I’m training for an ultra-marathon and a few bike races this summer so my routine is specifically geared towards this.  I’m doing 15-20 hours of cardio a week.  Usually, it’s 2-3 hard days during the week, followed by a rest-day. Then a typical weekend I get in a six hour run on Saturday and a five hour bike ride on Sunday, I’ll repeat this for a three weeks build, then I’ll take a rest week with a few low volume  and low intensity workouts.
When I’m not training, I love chasing powder for downhill skiing at Mammoth or Colorado, or go hiking, so I go from one extreme to another.

How do you make time to work out given your busy schedule and responsibilities at Herbalife?
On weekdays, I’m usually out the door by 6 a.m. to get in a 3 hour workout before work.  I’m lucky that the company culture at Herbalife is pretty cool and allows me to adjust my work schedule accordingly.  Of course, for many people with a rigid 9-5 schedule that’s not possible, but even then you should try to fit in a 30 minute workout in the morning or before dinner.

How does being a competitive athlete shape your views on the role of health and fitness in everyday life?
I’m aware that everything I put in my body impacts my health, and I think everyone – even non-competitive athletes – need to have this consciousness about their bodies.  Every decision I make nutritionally – from what I buy at the grocery store to the food I eat – I evaluate based on the effect it will have on my performance.  I’ll have a hamburger with the guys or some sweets from time to time, but even then it’s a conscious decision on my part and I’m fully aware of how it will affect my body.

What are your top three tips for health?
1. Do what’s attainable.  Anything you do to make it easier for yourself will go a long way.  Exercise five times a week even if it’s only a few pull-ups or pushups.  You might think you don’t have time to work out, but you’d be amazed that even as little as five minutes every day will go a long way to meeting your fitness goals.
The same thing applies to eating well.  I live near a health food-style grocery store and deli, so I have access to high-quality prepared food, but I also try to cook for the week ahead on Sunday nights.  I’ll chop up a bunch of vegetables so that way if I get home late during the week, it’s only a matter of throwing it all together for a decent meal.
2. Eat with a purpose. Ask yourself, why are you eating it and how will you benefit?
3. Know what you’re working towards. Whether it’s training for a race or a specific weight loss goal, make a plan and stick with it.

We caught up with John to get the lowdown on his workout routine and tips for leading a healthy lifestyle.

Can you tell us what your typical workout routine looks like?
My workout routine depends on my specific goals or an upcoming event.  Right now, I’m training for an ultra-marathon and a few bike races this summer so my routine is specifically geared towards this.  I’m doing 15-20 hours of cardio a week.  Usually, it’s 2-3 hard days during the week, followed by a rest-day. Then a typical weekend I get in a six hour run on Saturday and a five hour bike ride on Sunday, I’ll repeat this for a three weeks build, then I’ll take a rest week with a few low volume  and low intensity workouts.
When I’m not training, I love chasing powder for downhill skiing at Mammoth or Colorado, or go hiking, so I go from one extreme to another.

How do you make time to work out given your busy schedule and responsibilities at Herbalife?
On weekdays, I’m usually out the door by 6 a.m. to get in a 3 hour workout before work.  I’m lucky that the company culture at Herbalife is pretty cool and allows me to adjust my work schedule accordingly.  Of course, for many people with a rigid 9-5 schedule that’s not possible, but even then you should try to fit in a 30 minute workout in the morning or before dinner.

How does being a competitive athlete shape your views on the role of health and fitness in everyday life?
I’m aware that everything I put in my body impacts my health, and I think everyone – even non-competitive athletes – need to have this consciousness about their bodies.  Every decision I make nutritionally – from what I buy at the grocery store to the food I eat – I evaluate based on the effect it will have on my performance.  I’ll have a hamburger with the guys or some sweets from time to time, but even then it’s a conscious decision on my part and I’m fully aware of how it will affect my body.

What are your top three tips for health?
1. Do what’s attainable.  Anything you do to make it easier for yourself will go a long way.  Exercise five times a week even if it’s only a few pull-ups or pushups.  You might think you don’t have time to work out, but you’d be amazed that even as little as five minutes every day will go a long way to meeting your fitness goals.
The same thing applies to eating well.  I live near a health food-style grocery store and deli, so I have access to high-quality prepared food, but I also try to cook for the week ahead on Sunday nights.  I’ll chop up a bunch of vegetables so that way if I get home late during the week, it’s only a matter of throwing it all together for a decent meal.
2. Eat with a purpose. Ask yourself, why are you eating it and how will you benefit?
3. Know what you’re working towards. Whether it’s training for a race or a specific weight loss goal, make a plan and stick with it.
